India opened their two match Test series against Sri Lanka in sensational fashion, defeating the hosts by 165 runs in a thrilling first Test at the Galle International Stadium.
The five day contest produced several memorable performances, but two names stood above the rest. Devdutt Padikkal announced himself on the Test stage with a magnificent 211 runs across the match, while left arm spinner Manav Suthar delivered a match winning 10 wicket haul.
India’s victory also marked their 600th Test win, adding another historic moment to an already memorable match.
Devdutt Padikkal Announces Himself in Style

The biggest batting story of the match was undoubtedly Devdutt Padikkal.
Playing only his third Test, Padikkal produced a superb performance with the bat. He scored a magnificent 167 in India’s first innings, helping the visitors post a huge total of 462.
Padikkal showed tremendous patience and composure despite Sri Lanka’s spinners making life difficult for the Indian batters. His innings included 15 fours and a six and became his maiden Test century.
But Padikkal was not finished.
In India’s second innings, he added another 44 runs, taking his match tally to an impressive 211 runs.
His performance could prove extremely important for India’s plans at No. 3. After several experiments in the position, India may finally have found a batter capable of providing stability and consistency in the middle of the top order.
Manav Suthar Produces a Dream Performance

While Padikkal dominated the headlines with the bat, Manav Suthar was India’s biggest weapon with the ball.
The young left arm spinner picked up 10 wickets across the match, exploiting the conditions at Galle beautifully.
His first innings figures were 4 wickets for 76 runs, before he produced an even more decisive spell in Sri Lanka’s chase, taking 6 wickets for 55 runs. His final match tally of 10 wickets played a major role in India completing the victory.
Suthar’s performance is particularly significant because he is still establishing himself at international level. His ability to extract turn while also maintaining pressure on the Sri Lankan batters made him extremely difficult to handle.
With Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav also in India’s spin department, Suthar’s emergence gives the Indian team another exciting option for the remainder of the World Test Championship cycle.
KL Rahul Brings Experience and Stability
KL Rahul once again showed why he remains one of India’s most dependable Test batters.
Rahul scored 82 runs in the first innings and followed it with another 35 in the second, finishing the match with 117 runs.
His first innings was particularly valuable as India looked to build a substantial total after losing wickets around him. Rahul’s ability to absorb pressure and rotate the strike complemented Padikkal’s brilliant innings perfectly.
He also played an important role in helping India establish control during the opening stages of the Test.
What This Victory Means for India
This victory gives India an excellent start to the two match series and valuable momentum in the ongoing World Test Championship.
India will now turn their attention towards the second Test, which will be played at the SSC Cricket Ground in Colombo from August 23 to 27.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly. Their batters struggled to withstand India’s spin attack, while their bowlers found it difficult to contain Padikkal, Rahul and Pant.
The second Test promises another fascinating battle.
If the first Test was any indication, this series could become a defining chapter for several young Indian players.
For India, Galle was more than just a victory. It was the beginning of a new chapter, led by Devdutt Padikkal’s bat and Manav Suthar’s magical spin
Expert’s Opinion

Former Indian Cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said:
“Manav Suthar has a fabulous start to his career. He just does simple things so well, bowls wicket to wicket & he let’s pitch do the rest. His overall efficiency has been just outstanding to watch. I am getting this feeling that he has the ability to be the next Ashwin for India. He can bat a bit & his real strength has been the patience to wait for the batter to make a mistake. Hopefully he will continue this stellar form in overseas conditions as well. He is one big thing in Indian cricket to look out for in the future”.
